Our Partnership with The Wonky Garden
Sustainable Woodchip Ltd is proud to announce our partnership with The Wonky Garden, a remarkable volunteer-led charity based in Widnes. With two thriving sites – one at Ditton Community Centre and the other at Arden, part of Halton Housing – The Wonky Garden is a truly inspiring community project driven entirely by volunteers who are committed to improving wellbeing, nurturing nature and bringing people together.
Who Are The Wonky Garden?
The Wonky Garden is a vibrant and diverse green space, carefully designed to support people, wildlife and the wider community. Their gardens are a beautiful mix of secluded areas, open parkland and carefully cultivated planting spaces, all rich in biodiversity.
The charity takes a chemical-free and low-carbon approach to gardening, ensuring every corner of their space contributes to a healthier natural environment. Their work extends far beyond gardening – they support physical and mental wellbeing, strengthen local communities and provide vital educational opportunities for schools and colleges.
One of their standout roles is their involvement with a local hedgehog rescue, helping to rehabilitate and re-wild hedgehogs before releasing them safely back into natural habitats. Their wildlife efforts also include crafting bird boxes, bug houses and hedgehog shelters through their dedicated carpentry group.
In 2024, The Wonky Garden’s incredible impact was recognised nationally, featuring on BBC North West Tonight, the Royal Horticultural Society, and BBC Gardeners’ World. They have also jsut been awarded the Kings Award for Voluntary Service, which is equivalent to an MBE for an individual and is the highest award given to UK volunteer groups for outstanding work in their communities.

A True Community Hub
The Wonky Garden operates 100% through volunteer efforts and works all year round, supporting a vast network of individuals and community groups. Some of their key focus areas include:
• Supporting physical and mental health for people of all ages.
• Facilitating outdoor learning for local schools and colleges.
• Enhancing local biodiversity and protecting wildlife through sustainable practices.
• Growing food for community Foodbanks and providing cut flowers and plants as gifts.
• Leading a community Growing Network that helps others green their own spaces.
• Supporting hedgehog rescue, rehabilitation and release programmes.
Their recently expanded space, The Yard, has further strengthened their mission – giving them dedicated growing areas, improved facilities and a base for producing plants, craft items and wildlife houses for the community.
